• The puppet fighters representing the Phantom Thieves appear in the order that they are recruited in the original game. Their leader Joker appears at the end, using All-Out Attack alongside his allies. The only exceptions are Haru Okumura (who appears in the background instead), Futaba Sakura (who serves as a guide rather than participating in combat), and Goro Akechi.
• Aside from the Sudden Final Smash condition that references their All-Out Attack, the appearance of Daybreak references the name of the game's OVA adaption. It could also be a reference to Sinful Shell, a skill which is used to defeat the final boss Yaldabaoth at the very end of the game.

• The stage and music represent the Velvet Room, of which Igor is the proprietor.
• While the Robin puppet fighter represents Igor, the three Ridleys likely represent the residents of the Velvet Room that assist him; the only game in the series that features three assistants is Persona 2.
• The Assist Trophy items represent how meeting Igor results in the protagonists awakening and summoning their Personas. This 'awakening' aspect is also represented through the player starting with 300% damage and healing over time.

• The stage and music represent the Velvet Room, of which Caroline and Justine are residents.
• The timed nature and sudden damage condition reference the bonus boss fight against Caroline and Justine within Persona 5, which requires the Phantom Thieves to deal a certain amount of damage every six turns or else be wiped out by an All-Out Attack.

• Morgana's puppet fighter is Pikachu in its Pikachu Libre costume, another small masked creature. Both Morgana and Pikachu share Ikue Ōtani as their Japanese voice actress.
• The strong winds and Incineroar's Ore Club represent Morgana's Persona, Zorro, who has wind powers.

• Captain Falcon's attire represents the outfit worn by Ryuji as the Phantom Thief, Skull. The Home-Run Bat references how Ryuji uses bludgeoning weapons.
• Mii Gunner represents Ryuji's Persona, Captain Kidd.
• The stage resembles the exterior of Suguru Kamoshida's Palace, where Joker and Ryuji first awaken their Personas.

• Zero Suit Samus' skintight outfit resembles the outfit worn by Ann as the Phantom Thief, Panther.
• The stage resembles the interior of Kamoshida's palace, which is where Ann is recruited.
• Peach represents Ann's Persona, Carmen. The Fire Flower items represent Carmen's fire powers.

• Like Chrom, Yusuke is a blue-haired swordfighter, and both share Matthew Mercer and Tomokazu Sugita as their English and Japanese voice actors respectively.
• King Dedede represents Yusuke's Persona, Goemon, who is also known for using powerful physical and ice-based attacks.
• The Vince Assist Trophy references how Yusuke is an artist who designs the Phantom Thieves' logo.
• The stage references how Yusuke's teacher, Ichiryusai Madarame, utilizes traditional Japanese imagery in his design and palace.

• Sheik's black costume resembles Makoto's outfit as the Phantom Thief, Queen.
• An invisible Wario appears, preferring to use his Wario Bike. This references Makoto's Persona, Johanna, which takes the form of an animate motorcycle.
• The stage choice resembles Kaneshiro's Palace, where Makoto joins the Phantom Thieves. It could also be a reference to how Makoto is scared of ghosts.

• Futaba's puppet fighter is the default female Inkling; a puppet fighter using its default costume within a spirit battle is rare, and may be due to their similar appearances.
• Wily Capsule resembles Futaba's Persona, Necronomicon, which takes the form of a UFO with a human pilot (being Dr. Wily and Futaba respectively). This is also referenced through the Boss Galaga enemies, which may also represent Futaba's fondness for video games.
• The stage choice is a reference to the Egyptian styling of Futaba's palace.
• While most of the Phantom Thieves have Last Surprise—the standard battle theme—as the music for their spirit battles, Futaba's has Beneath the Mask—the overworld theme—which reflects that she never directly participates in battle.

• Haru is a gardener, so salads appear in the Item Tidal Wave and her Villager puppet fighter often plants trees. The stage choice also references this, as her garden is on the rooftop of the Shujin Academy.
• Daisy represents Haru's Persona, Milady. She starts with a Super Scope, since Milady uses gun-based skills.
• The stage choice references the fact that Haru often hangs out on the rooftop of the school taking care of plants.

• Marth's white costume represents Akechi's outfit as the Phantom Thief, Crow.
• Pit represents Akechi's Persona, Robin Hood, who is also an archer with a mostly white color scheme.
• The stage choice references Sae Niijima's palace, a large casino which Akechi works with the Phantom Thieves to infiltrate.
• The reversal of controls alludes to how Akechi can inflict psychotic episodes in people.
• Much like Futaba, Akechi doesn't use Last Surprise as his battle theme. Instead his battle has Rivers in the Desert, which is a reference to his father Masayoshi Shido, who uses Rivers in the Desert as his battle theme.
